This race has changed. Let’s talk about it.

A lot has changed in the North Carolina Senate race since my last message. You may have heard that Republicans have quietly started to count North Carolina out. You may be wondering how we’re responding, and what we’re doing in the final eight days to finish this race strong.

So I want to give you an honest update on where this race stands, and explain why we can’t get comfortable just yet. And why you shouldn’t either.

I know how easy it is to get swept up in the polls and take a lead for granted. I’m not asking you to ignore the numbers or the trends. But they only tell part of the story, and a few key facts need to be understood alongside them.

Just this month, President Obama’s top strategist, David Plouffe, weighed in on what’s at stake in this race. His message was simple: “We have to win the ones we have to win.”

North Carolina is one of those races. Campaign veterans and journalists alike have long seen this race as our best chance to flip a Senate seat this year, and the first step in taking back the Senate majority. It’s also a hard state to win. North Carolina hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate in 2008, Obama carried it that year but lost it in 2012, and races here historically come down to the margin of error, no matter what the polls say.

Roy himself had polls showing him up by double digits in 2016 and only won by 10,000 votes.

So if our best chance at flipping a U.S. Senate seat is within our reach, in a state that is historically difficult for Democrats to win, why would we take our foot off the gas now?

I want us to wake up on November 4th knowing we did everything in our control to flip this seat.

We will win this race on the margins, and we’ll lose it with complacency.

That’s why we’re using every one of these last eight days to keep talking to voters, keep organizing in communities big and small, and keep fighting for the future of North Carolina. Polls don’t mean anything without an organizing effort that gets people to the ballot box. And that takes resources.

Will you chip in $5 today or whatever you can spare to help get us through the finish line? We can’t waste a single moment.
